What We Need Are More Fingers
FARMVILLE, N.C. (AP) — An 18-month-old Farmville girl who was born without fingers is back at home after a Maryland surgeon completed procedures that will help her grow them. Brittany Apgar was born without fingers on her right hand. After three operations that began last September, the developing fingers have grown an inch and a half. Tom Apgar says his daughter has surprised everyone. Dr. Norman Cowen took cartilage from Brittany’s toes and implanted it into her hand to grow fingers, but the recovery is far from complete. One of the pins placed in her arm to help her tissue grow has retracted. Also, the bone didn’t grow with the stretching, so Cowen had to take a piece of bone from her left leg and divide it so it could fill in her thumb, forefinger and ring finger. Brittany will have her last operation for the year in March, when Dr. Cowen will actually separate her fingers and remove the pin from her arm.
